iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: Which One Should You Buy?
The iPhone 17 brings a smoother screen and a faster chip, but the discounted iPhone 16 is the smarter buy for more people than you would expect.
Every September the same question returns with a new number: buy the new iPhone, or save money on last year model while it is still on sale? This year the honest answer is closer than the launch event suggested. The iPhone 17 is the better phone. The iPhone 16, at the prices it now sells for, is very often the better buy. Here is how to decide without a spreadsheet.
The biggest real change is the screen. The iPhone 17 brings the 120Hz ProMotion display to the standard model, and once your eyes adjust to that smoothness, a 60Hz screen feels like it is moving through water. The chip is a generation faster, which you will feel mainly in games, photo processing and how the phone ages in year four. The front camera is better for video calls and selfies, and the base storage finally starts at a size most people will not outgrow.

What did not change matters just as much. The design, size and feel in the hand are near identical, the rear camera system takes photos most people cannot tell apart in daylight, and both phones run the same software with the same features for years to come. If your daily use is messages, photos, maps and social apps, the iPhone 16 already does all of it at full speed.
So the decision is really about the size of the discount. At full price, buy the iPhone 17 every time: the screen and storage alone justify it. When the iPhone 16 is discounted by a fifth or more, which happens regularly now that it is the previous model, the value flips. You give up smoothness you may not miss and save enough to cover a case, a charger, and a year of cloud storage. Watch both prices on the product pages and let the gap make the decision.
Your current phone matters too. Coming from an iPhone 13 or older, the iPhone 17 is a large, satisfying jump and the one to get. Coming from an iPhone 15, neither phone is a necessary upgrade this year; your money works harder staying in your pocket until next cycle. Owners of an iPhone 16 should not be reading this article at all, unless the ProMotion screen is personally worth a trade in loss.
The short version: full price, choose the 17. A real discount, choose the 16 and spend the change on storage or nothing at all. Set a price alert for the model you want and buy the moment your number appears, rather than the moment an advertisement tells you to.
